Abstract:
In a 1976 interview for Spanish television, Mario Vargas Llosa entertains with his childhood memories of Cochabamba Bolivia and Arequipa Peru that informed his early writings. He discusses his research on the Amazon forest for his novel "The Green House" and his traumatic experiences at the Leoncio Prado Military Academy in Lima that provided characterizations in his more political works like "The Time of the Hero" and "Conversation in the Cathedral." His first attempt at a satirical novel was the popular "Captain Pantoja and the Special Services" that he co-directed for film. Mario Vargas Llosa expands on his philosophy of life and writing, Spanish and Latin American literature, his on and off again friendship with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, his family, and advice for aspiring writers.
